Alternativ’s Strategic Partnership and Commitment to Entrepreneurship and Business Skills Training in Uganda

The Remnant Generation, Alternativ's longtime partner in the nation's capital, originally opened their doors as a safe and inclusive place offering social and medical services for young women in the community expelled from their homes (often due to rape, child pregnancy, and other forms of assault). After adding Alternativ's Business Essentials Curriculum to their programming, they saw their young women graduating empowered, confident, and equipped with the business and other skills needed to make a difference in their lives.

This resulted in the revitalization of the "School of Purpose", inspiring business partnerships in the local community to facilitate direct internship and employment placement for 70% of program graduates as well as new businesses in tailoring, cleaning products, beauticians, food products and more. Graduates saw improvements in their domestic situations, reports of abuse and gender based violence lowered as women gained education, confidence, and financial empowerment. They shared what they had learned with friends and family, becoming role models, and often gaining voices in their communities for the first time. This year, we have big plans for TRG’s girls and other communities in Uganda! Click below to support or work, or keep reading to learn more!

Help Empower New communities

Due to the Pandemic, TRG and their School of Purpose went mobile. They continued their work and expanded to new communities in 2022, establishing 22 new reception centers and delivering programs to 864 new beneficiaries!

They combined the Alternativ Business Essentials Program with training in hairdressing, catering, tailoring, and the production of liquid soaps, reusable sanitary pads, bags/baskets, and other crafts to see their young ladies flourish with new businesses and employment! Graduates started their own business clubs, side hustles, got work in salons, hotels, and tailors in their communities, went back to school, and were accepted into new internship programs as well!

Get to Know Some Graduate Entrepreneurs!

All her life, Vastine was interested in cars. TRG offered her an opportunity to pursue her dream. After completing her business training and other skills programs, she enrolled for a one year mechanical engineering course and graduated in 2022. Now, she’s one of the best at the garage and earns a sustainable income!

Shakira and her two babies were in a real tough place before being introduced to TRG. She later received counseling to overcome her trauma, the Alternativ entrepreneurship education, and vocational training in hair dressing to help her get back on her feet and off of the streets.

“I currently move out and look for customers around my neighborhood and save some of my earnings to start my own business. My dream is to start a very big salon to be able to work, employ other girls, earn money and take care of my two little children.

Now that The Remnant Generation Has Grown, It’s Time to Train and Equip New Staff!

In May of this year, we'll be traveling to Kampala, the Nation's capital, in order to connect with and learn about the businesses launched by previous Alternativ graduates, deliver new advanced business essentials modules (YES!), equip and train TRG staff and NEW community and NGO leaders to deliver Alternativ programing, help launch a NEW social enterprise, and so much more!

Thanks to some wonderful Alternativ fans and supporters, we've already raised $6,000 for this year's in person programming! We need to raise $10,000 more in order to:

- Get party supplies to celebrate Alternativ graduates and their accomplishments! ($500)
- Pay TRG staff and Alternativ program champions (turned trainers) for their time ($500)
- Support travel and accommodation costs for TRG staff based outside of Kampala to come receive their Train the Trainers ($500)
- Buy an industrial grade oven & other supplies to launch a new bakery social enterprise for Alternativ graduates to put their skills to work after completing training ($2,500)
- Purchase, print, and prepare all needed workbooks, art supplies, and other kit materials needed to run entrepreneurship empowerment trainings ($2,500)
